Safeguarding is about protecting children, and young people from abuse or neglect.
We are all responsible for the safety of children and young people and we must ensure that we are doing all we can to protect the most vulnerable members of our society.
Furthermore we have a duty of care for students set out in the following legislation: Children Act 1989, Education Act 2002, Children Act 2004 and Keeping Children Safe in Education 2016. If we believe that a student may be harmed we have a duty to share the information promptly. In a situation where we are concerned about the welfare of a child THS will share information with other agencies (such as social care) without seeking prior consent from the family. Where ever possible (unless this could place someone in danger) we will speak to family to explain why we are doing this and keep them fully informed.
The information that we have about students is confidential. That means we won’t share it outside of the school without prior consent from the family. Information is stored electronically and each child has a file where reports, assessments, plans, and notes are kept. The senior leadership team, house staff and SENCO’s have access to this file but to share information more widely, for example to inform other teaching staff or contact an external agency for support, consent will be sought from the family. The family has a right to view their child’s file and such requests should be actioned within 7 days of request.
In order to protect people from abuse and harm it is important that everyone knows what to do if they suspect someone is being abused.

Gifted and Talented students at Tiverton High School are those who perform or have the ability to perform at a level significantly beyond their chronologically aged peers. Tiverton High School will provide the gifted and talented students with their full entitlement to the National Curriculum and, additionally, provide access to curriculum enhancement in both National Curriculum areas and, where appropriate, outside.
The School will seek to discover and utilise a range of strategies to improve the teaching and learning of the gifted and talented. The focus for these strategies will be through high quality teaching and learning, since this will impact on a greater number of students with greater frequency than ‘one off’ enrichment activities. Moving up to secondary school can be a pretty nerve-racking experience both for you and your parents. We work hard to try to make sure that transition from your primary school is as positive as it can be for everyone, no matter what your needs might be. So that we can give as much support as possible to you all, we have put together a group of staff who will be able to help you in a variety of different ways. You will all belong to a House from September and will be members of a tutor group with your own tutor who will get to know you very well. They will give you and your family the information and individual advice and guidance you’ll need as you settle in to our school. There will be students of all ages in your tutor group, so that you will have contacts with different people and they will lend a hand as you find your way around and settle in. Everyone will have a Learning Manager who will make sure each of you makes good progress in lessons and a ‘Welfare Officer’ who will make sure that any day to day problems are sorted out.
You may have already met some of our staff who work to make transition as easy for you as possible. Kerrie, our Transition Assistant, has been to see everyone and will continue to work with some of you and your families.

The Transition Assistant at Tiverton High School is Kerrie Butler who works with all the partner primaries in the Tiverton Learning Community. She also does outreach work with schools that are not in our catchment area so all children are enabled to use the Transition Service.
Kerrie works in both the primary schools and the High School and make visits the primary schools regularly from January to July to gather information about students. This information is then fed back to the High School Support Centre if needed and then to tutors later in the year. From this information Kerrie will begin to work with 15-20 students each who need individual support and support plans on a 1:1 basis. This support is provided in a variety of ways including activity days during the summer holidays, self esteem building clubs, school-based work and supporting and implementing Common Assessment Frameworks (CAF’s). The Transition Assistants also work closely with other agencies within the Tiverton Learning Community to try and establish close links and information sharing.
The Government provides Pupil Premium funding, which is in addition to main school funding, to help address national inequalities between the achievements of children eligible for free school meals or children in care.
The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools based on the number of students who are known to be eligible for free school meals or have been eligible in the last six years and children who have been continuously looked after for more than six months. It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual students within their responsibility.
At Tiverton high School we support all of our students.
We do this by providing high quality classroom teaching supplemented by interventions to support vulnerable learners. The Middle Management Team work alongside the Senior Leadership Team and Governors to ensure that the Pupil Premium is targeted and provides the best possible support to students that may be at a disadvantage.
The literacy and numeracy catch-up premium gives schools additional funding to support year 7 pupils who did not achieve the expected standard in reading or maths at the end of key stage 2 (KS2).
