At Tiverton High School we will pursue excellence for all in PE & Sport and excellence through PE & Sport. We will aim to raise standards of achievement in PE and Sport for all our students. We will aim to use the power of PE & Sport to enhance the academic, personal and social development of all our students. We will aim to increase their self-esteem, imbue them with a sense of pride in their successes, encourage them to strive for improvement, motivate them to achieve more and thus raise their standards of attainment in all areas of the curriculum.
We will also promote links between schools, share resources, develop and spread good practice to further raise standards for all students.
The P.E. Department will strive to make young people healthier, encourage them to develop their self-discipline and teamwork skills, develop their leadership potential and introduce them to activities they may enjoy and derive health benefits from for a lifetime.
By providing enhanced opportunities and offering encouragement to engage in PE & Sport as spectators, participants, coaches, administrators or officials the members of our community will be included in the benefits that PE & Sport can provide. The local community will have access to sport and physical recreation both for its own sake and for the sake of the wider health and social benefits sport and other recreational activities can bring.

During the 2 years you will complete between 5/6 BTEC sport units. These may include: Leadership in sport, sports injury, practical sport and body and sport. Course work will be completed during these units and submitted to your teacher.
This will be graded as a PASS/MERIT/DISTINCTION. Your top three units will be submitted for moderation. If all three units are completed to a pass standard you will get a pass, if all are merit standard you will get a merit, and if all are distinction standard you will get a distinction.
"BTEC sport covers a range of topics involved with sports. There is a lot of theory work involved along with practical sports such as team sports and individual sports. BTEC is made up of different assignments in which you can achieve a pass, merit or distinction. The theory work includes finding out about the bodily systems such as respiratory systems and circulatory systems. You also get the chance to complete a first aid course whilst completing the assignment on sports safety. Whilst being involved in the team or individual sports you are marked by a peer on your performance. This goes alongside your theory work and is involved in an assignment as you have to make handbooks and skill books about how to play the sports you have studied. BTEC sport is based around “how the body works” and P.E based activities. Overall it is a really great course, and great for anyone who is interested in Sports and how the body works."
Remember that you need to choose on the correct year of entry for GCSE PE to get the correct information.
A Student's View;
"GCSE P.E has a good balance between theory and practical work, having two lessons a week means that there is time to have one theory lesson and one practical. There are a range of sports available to play in the lessons and at the end of the course or during you can get marked and graded on a sport of your choice in the sense of Playing the game, Coaching the game, Refereeing the game, at your choice. You are marked out of 10 and that is part of your GCSE overall score. In the theory lessons you learn about bodily systems, diets, and how the body works and is effected by exercise in different ways."
