Below you will find a simple summary of the topics we will cover this year.  Use it to see what’s coming up and think back over what you have already done. You will also find useful information on the assessment and homework project for each term.

War Poetry - Reading


You will study a variety of war poetry and examine the ways in which the writer’s viewpoint is made clear through language, ideas, structure and tone.Essay response or answer to a series of questions on “What does the poet want us to think about war? How does the poet make this clear?”Create a soldier profile folder.
Gothic - Writing


You will examine the subtlety of Gothic writing (as opposed to explicit horror) and learn how to use vocabulary and manipulate sentences to create tension. 
A descriptive piece of Gothic writing.Research a local ghost story and present your findings to the class.

Ballads - Speaking & Listening


You will read a range of ballads and be made aware of the conventions of the ballad form. Teaching could focus on The Lady of Shallot and explore modern interpretations, including a focus on what made the Lady break the rules.
Write an introduction to a place you know well for The Rough Guide.Find a range of texts about a place of your choice and evaluate how that place is presented in each one.
Travel - Writing


You will read a range of travel writing including information texts (e.g. holiday brochures) and descriptive/entertaining texts (e.g. Bill Bryson). You will examine the conventions of these text types, focusing specifically on text level : topic sentences/paragraphs.Write an introduction to a place you know well for The Rough Guide.Find a range of texts about a place of your choice and evaluate how that place is presented in each one.

Charity Advertising - Reading


You will examine a range of charity advertising, including multi-media texts and analyse the way in which text and language choices influence meaning.Looking closely at a leaflet and a TV appeal for one charity, analyse how each one tries to persuade you to support the charity’s campaignCreate a charity advertising campaign for a charity of your own choice.
Wild Girl, Wild Boy - Speaking & Listening


You will examine the ways in which a writer uses symbols to create meaning and explore the concept of magical realism using questions to make inferences on the text.Produce a review of personal performance across the year.A group discussion of “How is WILDNESS presented in the play.”
