Tiverton High School was recently awarded ‘Champion School’ status by the National Citizen Service (NCS) and is the only school in Mid-Devon to achieve the high status.
The list features over 300 secondary schools from across the country, and is awarded on their commitment to promoting the NCS programme. NCS is available to all 15 – 17 year olds, and provides opportunities for children to build skills for work and life, outside of term time.
Tiverton High School Assistant Head Teacher, Tom Williams, said: “To be included on the list alongside other fantastic schools regionally and nationally is a real achievement. We encourage all of our Year 11 students to get involved in the NCS programme, to further develop the skills needed for their future.
“The programme includes outdoor activities, CV and UCAS application workshops and volunteering, all while building social skills and confidence,” Tom continues. “The feedback from students who have had the opportunity to take part is brilliant, and highly recommend it to younger year groups.”
Over 275,000 young people currently take part in the programme, 37 of which are Year 11 students at Tiverton High School.
Elliot Whitecross, NCS Delivery Co-ordinator, said: “NCS gives young people an opportunity to develop skills that will boost their career prospects, whilst helping to give back to their community through a social action project. Tiverton High School has been fantastic in its support of NCS over the last few years, showing a real passion and enthusiasm for the programme, and this was recognised by awarding them ‘NCS Champion School’ status. Ahead of the Summer 2017 NCS programmes, this has continued, with 39 young people from Tiverton High School already signed up, a record number from any school in our area”
