The brightest mathematicians at Tiverton High School have come away with gold, silver and bronze from a national mathematics challenge.
The annual Intermediate Mathematics Challenge, run by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT), challenges students in creative mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Just 7% of students achieve the top gold award. Year 9, 10 and 11 students at Tiverton High School achieved and an impressive 5 gold awards and 9 silver. A further 13 bronze awards were given placing the students in the top 40% of competitors. Three students – Katy Bates, William Blackburn and Mikolaj Sobieraj – progressed to a follow-on round, with Mikolaj achieving a merit award in the Olympiad round – the highest accolade ever achieved by a student at the school.
Maths teacher, Mr Tom Baker, said: “Once again, our students have shown us how much they are able to achieve when they are challenged. To be selected to take part is commendable enough, but to achieve these awards is a fantastic recognition of the hard work that all of our students have put in. Well done to you all!”
All of the students who took part were invited to a “head’s lunch” with Headteacher Sammy Crook, where they were presented with their certificates. Sammy said: “It was a pleasure to celebrate the fantastic achievements of some of our most talented mathematicians, and they should all be extremely proud of their achievements – as we all are of them. Congratulations to you all!”
