Useful Information for Exams

This information is sent home with students as a hard copy and also emailed to parents electronically (where we have a valid email address).

1. Statements of Entry 

  • These are sent out in January. 
  • Students/parents are asked to sign and return a copy to confirm that final exam entries are correct. 

2. Skeleton timetable 

  • ONLY supplied before the summer exams. 
  • A tool to help plan revision. 
  • Show the day/date of an exam BUT the times shown are intended as an indication of morning or afternoon only! 
  • The times shown may alter so don’t write them on calendars yet! 

3. Detailed Timetable 

  • This is a personalised timetable showing the dates and finalised times of a student’s exams. 
  • Candidate identity is required under the updated JCQ regulations, which means candidate cards with names and photos are on desks to allow for checks.

4. Before the Exam 

  • Students must arrive on time and go to the correct exam venue as instructed.  
  • Candidates must sit in their allocated seat and follow invigilator instructions at all times.  
  • Full school uniform must be worn, and students must bring their own equipment, including black pens, pencils, ruler, rubber, and any required mathematical instruments or scientific calculator.  

5. Prohibited Items 

  • Mobile phoneswatches, and any web‑enabled or technological devices must not be brought into the exam room. Possession of these items on your person — even if switched off—can result in disqualification.  
  • Only essential items may be brought to the desk; water must be in a clear bottle with a sports cap 

6. During the Exam 

  • Candidates must not talk, turn around, or attempt to communicate with others once inside the examination room.  
  • Students must follow all instructions from invigilators and must not attempt to engage in any unfair or dishonest practice.  
  • JCQ also requires all centres to follow strict exam paper security, including secure storage and controlled access to materials, overseen by the head of centre and exams officer. [jcq.org.uk] 
  • Listen to all instuctions and notices given by the Invigilator. 
  • Read ALL instructions on the front of your paper. 
  • Candidates must ensure they have the correct Tier & Subject paper in front of them.  Any questions please inform the Invigilator. 
  • Disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated within the exam room. Any incidences will be reported. 

7. Identification, Integrity & Security 

  • The head of centre is responsible for maintaining compliance with all JCQ regulations, including exam integrity, secure handling of papers, and reporting any suspected malpractice.  

8. Exam Access Arrangements

  • Access arrangements and reasonable adjustments are managed in line with JCQ guidance to ensure fair access for all candidates, including provisions such as supervised rest breaks or modified papers where appropriate. This is covered by the SENDCo /Exam Officer Team at Tiverton High School. 

9. Clash Candidates 

The exam officer will be responsible as necessary for arranging supervision of candidates during external exams, identifying a secure venue, staffing clash candidate room.  Candidates will be informed individually if this affects them.
